A reminder that while Halloween is Thursday this week, students are required to follow the BRHS dress code. No hats, hoods or masks can be worn. Underwear should not be visible and clothing should cover the chest, midriff, back and mid-thigh appropriately. Clothing that depicts or in any way refers to, advertises, or promotes illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco products, that has sexual implications, that promotes violence or illegal acts, or that is derogatory toward any group or individual is not allowed. All students on school grounds will wear shoes. Garments, chains, some chain-like necklaces and/or accessories that may be used as a weapon or perceived as gang member symbols, will not be allowed. Students who are in violation of the dress code will be asked to change their clothing or go home until a proper correction is made. Students who habitually violate the dress code will be assigned detention.

The National Honor Society would like to bring awareness to a new service project. They would like to collect new or used sports equipment for students who are unable to get the proper equipment to play a sport. They are going to be collecting equipment at the high school, but elementary students will still have access to the equipment if needed. Please bring in sports equipment in good condition to the high school, in hopes that students who would like to play sports are given the opportunity.

Students, in a new class "Historical Inquiry and Field Research," channel their inner historian during a visit to Ovens Mouth Preserve while trying to identify the remains of an old dam utilized as part of the local ice harvesting industry. At its height over 600 area residents were employed by the industry.

CONGRATULATIONS DR. INGRID MERRILL - Boothbay High School foreign language teacher Ingrid Merrill recently earned her doctorate degree in French Literature. This is a tremendous accomplishment and indicative of the high caliber of teachers in our schools.

Boothbay wins again!! Kylie Brown, has been named 1st place winner of the 2019 Maine DNA Day essay contest, sponsored by Teaching the Genome Generation and The Jackson Laboratory. According to a Jackson Lab spokesperson, Kylie submitted an outstanding discussion and defense of arguments for and against the release of a Huntington’s Disease genetic diagnosis. We are delighted to award Kylie a cash prize for her winning essay. We are so proud of you Kylie!! If you know the Rhino drawing program, the intricacy of these drawings will not be lost on you. Incredible detail, layering and shading went into these pieces. Fantastic ladies!

We Never Refuse a Student Lunch! There is a rumor circulating that we won't serve a child lunch if they owe the school money for lunches. That is false! No student is ever denied lunch. We do though expect parents to pay for the meals their children eat. They are not free.

Exciting to see Mr. Gorey's students engaged in mock debates representing Maine's candidates for state and local government. It was a superb way to challenge his students to think critically, practice public speaking skills, and engage in the issues. 21st learning at its best!
Nine BRHS students were guests of the Boothbay Region Rotary International. Most of these students were either considering or already students at the VoTech in Bath. The Rotary honored those students for being the next generation of workers in the trades in our state.
Rise in Number of Students Nationally Taking the SAT. In 2017, 1.7 million students took the assessment. In 2018, 2.14 million students have taken it. Average score is 531 in math and 536 in writing and reading. Look at Khan Academy if you need help to raise your scores.
21st Century Learning in Action. I peered in a classroom and saw Faith Blethen, and Gifted and Talented teacher Emily Higgins, learn "coding" through a Mass Online College Course from Harvard. Doesn't get more 21st Century than that! Dr. Laser

The high school gifted and talented program visited the FARMS kitchen at the CLC Y on Thursday morning. Students prepared, cooked, plated, and ate a meal made from locally grown foods. The goal of team-building and community growth were achieved! Students suggested for their next visit bringing elementary students to grow relationships across the schools.

Charles Hall Acton, "Hall", from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, visited the Honors Freshman Science class at the end of September. He talked about the path that got him to NASA as well as technology he helped develop to track asteroids as they come close to Earth. Hall also brought in a sample of material used to collect space dust. Hall visits the area from California each fall and we hope to have him back again next year! https://eyes.nasa.gov/
